One of the most effective treatments is what we call brain therapy, and it actually consists of two different therapies.
Cranial Sacral Therapy + Fascia Release = “Brain Therapy”
CRANIAL SACRAL THERAPY
is based on the fact that the brain naturally “breathes,” slowly expanding and contracting over a period of seconds. We believe that the more readily the brain can expand and contract, the healthier the brain will be, the faster it can heal, and the better it can perform its many vital functions.
A healthy, unconstricted brain breathes in cycles of 60 seconds or more. Children with special needs, on the other hand, typically have cycles of only a few seconds. These short, tight cycles are the result of pressure on the brain. This pressure, in turn, happens when the bones in the skull and jaw are misaligned or misshapen due to trauma. Cranial sacral therapy is a gentle, non-invasive protocol that addresses these issues directly.
FASCIA RELEASE THERAPY
is based on the fact that the entire body is connected by a single, continuous sheath of tissue, called the fascia. When the body is traumatized, the trauma will be “held” in the fascia. Instead of being relaxed throughout the body, the fascia can become tight, even rigid. This tightness appears initially at the site of the trauma; however, because the fascia is a single, continuous sheath, tightness in one part is invariably communicated to other parts of the fascia. For example, tightness from a trauma to the hip will “pull” on the rest of the sheath, causing tightness and strain elsewhere – for example, in the neck, jaw and skull.
Dr. Barry Gillespie is a pioneer in combining these two therapies – cranial sacral and fascia release – in a powerful protocol called “Brain Therapy.” He developed Brain Therapy when he realized that even repeated cranial sacral treatments sometimes failed significantly to improve the brain’s breathing cycle. This was caused, he discovered, by unreleased tightness of the fascia around the skull and jaw. Conversely, by adding fascia release therapy, the effect of cranial sacral therapy is immediately and dramatically improved. The result, for children with mild, moderate or even serious brain injuries can be extraordinary: children who have been “stuck” for months or even years start making excellent progress with their programs; and children whose progress was slow can experience accelerated progress on their programs.
Dr. Gillespie has generously shared his knowledge, skills and time with the staff of The Family Hope Center. He continues to serve as a valued consultant and advisor. He takes as much delight as we do in healing our special children. We are honored and blessed to have Dr. Gillespie as a partner in healing children throughout the world.
