happybaby2Epilepsy disorder describes disorders that tend to cause seizures. A seizure can be a change in consciousness or awareness of sensation, or uncontrolled movement of some or all parts of the body. Epileptic seizures can vary in frequency and severity, and may occur only a few times in a lifetime or on a daily basis.

While seizures are a symptom of epilepsy, seizures can be brought on by many other factors. Some seizures are triggered by reactions to drugs, dangerously high fever, severe head injury, diabetes, narcolepsy and even some heart conditions.

Epilepsy is not a fainting disorder, a result of holding one’s breath, temporary confusion or forgetfulness, inability to concentrate, or catatonia. Neither is epilepsy a mental illness or an indication of reduced intelligence. There is some evidence that epilepsy may be genetic, but it is not contagious. One cannot “catch” epilepsy like one catches a cold.

Since the majority of people consider epilepsy to be bad, the common method of treating the condition is to administer antiepileptic or anti-seizure medication. However, in a study published in 1942 in the American Journal of Psychiatry, entitled “The Other Side of a Fit,” Dr. Temple Fay, a brilliant neurologist and neurosurgeon wrote that a seizure is a “defense mechanism” designed by nature to help and not hurt. He reasoned that seizures are a signpost to an imbalance or neurological problem in the brain with the purpose of the restoration of a balanced state.

Dr. Fay’s findings regarding the nature of seizures provided an alternate way of treating epilepsy. At The Family Hope Center we have found that treatment of epilepsy should go beyond the administration of anti-seizure medication. While these medications may reduce the frequency and intensity of seizures, they don’t really address the source of the seizures: the brain. Indeed, they may actually do more harm than good as they can limit thinking, mobility and social interaction.

The Family Hope Center uses a two-pronged approach in dealing with epilepsy and seizures. After a thorough evaluation that determines the precise nature of your child’s neurological injury, we address the seizures, at the same time pursuing their source. Some of these triggers are insufficient supplies of oxygen to the brain (hypoxia), inadequate digestion and poor gastrointestinal absorption, metabolic imbalances, restricted blood flow to the brain, high fever, poor nutrition and organ toxicity.

Once the neurological evaluation has been completed we develop a comprehensive therapy program. This approach is designed to target the specific areas of the brain where injury has occurred. At the same time we look at metabolic function, toxins, allergies, nutritional absorption problems, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, hormonal imbalances and cranial blood flow problems.

Our aim is to detoxify, purify, strengthen and provide balance for every system in the body by improving the metabolic, neurological and physical health of the child. We begin the process by increasing oxygen levels in the brain. This increased oxygen delivery actually makes possible, and then accelerates, the healing of the brain. Also, since the proper function of the cranial sacral mechanism is so vital, we endeavor to ensure that it is operating to its full potential.

Then understanding the importance of proper nutrition on overall function, we develop a cleansing diet. This individually-designed diet will increase the neurotransmitter function in the brain, restore gastrointestinal health and effectively eliminate allergens and toxins from the diet.

At The Family Hope Center we believe that no therapy program will work without the intense involvement of you, the parents. We will educate you and give you the tools necessary to follow through on the therapies designed to heal your child of epilepsy. Whether that is diet, a home-based neurofeedback program, or an oxygen-delivery system you will become the best therapist your child could have. Only a phone call away, we are always ready to provide ongoing support and encouragement as we all work together to see your child completely healed.
