girl-redsweater-smA simple dyslexia definition is that it is a frustrating neurological problem that can be primarily traced to processing issues in the auditory and visual pathways of the cortex. These processing problems, however mild, lead to substantial struggles in learning to read, write, memorize instructions and use language effectively.

Although these children are primarily hurt in the cortical areas of the brain, they are also disorganized in the midbrain. In addition to processing difficulties in the cortex, children with "dyslexia" have a very difficult time becoming neurologically dominant (that is, becoming all left- or all right-sided). As the central nervous system matures, by 6 to 7 years old, children should display dominance in their visual pathway, hearing pathway, tactile pathway and motor pathway. This universal dominance leads to final organization of the cortex, and the ability to reliably receive, store and retrieve information. Failure to have such dominance leads to retrieval issues in reading and understanding. Children who suffer from stuttering, for example (firing or speaking from both hemispheres), also have laterality/dominance issues.
